Compassion Without Fatigue. A Unitary Caring Science Approach
Information:
Please join us as we welcome our special guest Dr. Christine Griffin who will share with us her latest research:  Griffin, C., Sousa, K., Jones, J., Ozkaynak, M., & Horton-Deutsch, S. (2024). Compassion without fatigue: A Unitary Caring Science Approach Part III—Theory-Guided practice to advance and sustain nurses. International Journal for Human Caring, August 2024, 1-12. doi: 10.20467/IJHC-2023-0020.
Dr. Griffin and colleagues explore a theory-guided practice using Unitary Caring Science to support nurses' well-being and prevent compassion fatigue. By proposing this paradigm shift we learn that nurses can use theory guided practices to intentionally thrive in their roles and experience more compassion with less burnout despite healthcare challenges. The study emphasizes the importance of revisiting foundational nursing theories, particularly Watson’s (2008) Unitary Caring Science, to rejuvenate nursing’s unique, compassionate purpose and sacred calling into this profession, while advocating for moving away from medical models that focused on efficiency and throughput.  By focusing on transpersonal relational caring moments, the authors highlight how compassion can be the foundation for both patient and nurse healing. Their research suggests new ways to pattern nursing experiences that honor nurses’ humanity, offering them the same care they provide to patients. Ultimately, it calls for a deeper understanding of nurses' roles and the importance of compassion for both patients and caregivers alike.
